Polestar's upcoming 2 model is set to revolutionize the automotive landscape, blending sportiness with a sleek, saloon-style design. The new Polestar 2, set to arrive in 2027, will be a significant departure from its predecessor, targeting Tesla's Model 3 with a focus on performance and a fresh design language. This reinvention marks the beginning of Polestar's second chapter, led by CEO Michael Lohscheller and new design chief Philipp Römers.
The Polestar 2 will strike a delicate balance between evolution and revolution. Lohscheller, previously the boss of Opel-Vauxhall, emphasizes that the car's core role is to retain existing customers while incorporating improvements in battery technology and range. However, the new model will not be a mere copy of the current car. Römers, who designed the Audi e-tron GT and Volkswagen Golf Mk7, brings a fresh perspective to the design, aiming to lower the ride height and create a more dynamic stance.
The teaser image hints at a sportier, longer saloon with a lower stance, a significant departure from the current car's jacked-up, SUV-inspired design. Römers confirms that the new design language will introduce horizontal cues, visually lowering the car and emphasizing its performance. The front end will feature Polestar's iconic 'dual-blade' headlamps and a characterful design, devoid of a traditional grille, similar to the Polestar 3's bridge.
The interior will also reflect Polestar's sporty ethos, with a driver-oriented cockpit, vibrant colors, and a warmer, more human user interface. The new platform, shared with other Geely brands, will enable a variety of vehicles with different lengths, tracks, and wheelbases, ensuring the 2 and the upcoming midsize-SUV, the 7, can utilize the same underpinnings.
Despite the technical details remaining under wraps, the Polestar 2 is expected to offer a superior range and charging capabilities compared to its predecessor. Prices are likely to start at just under £50,000 when UK sales begin in the summer of 2027, making it a compelling alternative to the Tesla Model 3.
