The Portland Trail Blazers are finally starting to live up to the expectations set at the beginning of the season. After a slow start, the team is now showing glimpses of the long and rangy defense, waves of athleticism, and depth and versatility that were anticipated. The tough-out mentality is also starting to emerge, as Donovan Clingan exclaims, "It feels like we’re starting to be the team that everyone thought we were going to be at the beginning of the year."
The Blazers' 132-116 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers showcased their improved health and performance. Despite the Lakers' shorthanded lineup, the Blazers dominated from the start, lapping their opponents early and building a 24-point lead in the fourth quarter. The offense shot 53% from the field, and the defense suffocated most opponents, with the exception of Marcus Smart and Drew Timme.
However, the Blazers' success is not solely due to their current form. They are also benefiting from the return of key players like Jerami Grant and Jrue Holiday, as well as the emergence of Sidy Cissoko and Caleb Love. The development of young players like Clingan and Sharpe has also contributed to the team's depth and versatility.
Despite these improvements, the Blazers are not playing at their full potential yet. They are not applying relentless full-court pressure defense or running and gunning for fast-break opportunities. However, with the return of Deni Avdija and the continued development of their young players, the Blazers are inching closer to the team they were before injuries and illnesses disrupted their mojo.
Looking ahead, the Blazers will face the Miami Heat on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Moda Center. The team is slowly returning to its early-season form, and with continued development and health, they may be able to make a big jump and start winning a lot of games.
